Description
Caption on the back of this photograph reads, “The new Dravo Research Center contains facilities to serve the varied need of the company’s diversified operations.” Dravo Corporation, founded in 1891 and headquartered in Pittsburgh, originally sold power plant equipment and expanded into erection services, which in 1898 led the company into the general construction field. Later, realizing that towboats and barges would be needed to transport these building supplies, the company entered the shipbuilding and river transportation business. The research center, located at Neville Island near Pittsburgh, housed chemical, metallurgical, minerals, water and waste treatment, and other laboratories. In addition, pilot ore and minerals processing equipment, a concrete testing lab, and other physical testing facilities were located there.
