Description
In 1955 John E. Connelly was the treasurer of ALCOSAN, the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority. One of this agency’s missions was the vitalization of the Pittsburgh rivers, which had become dirty and neglected in the preceding years. Connelly, who also realized the potential of the rivers, felt that an excursion boat was needed to show the rivers off. His nephew, who he had enlisted to find a craft, located the boat, “Bridget Anne” in Erie, Pennsylvania. In the spring of 1958, this vessel, christened the "Gateway Clipper," inaugurated pleasure cruises on Pittsburgh’s rivers. Today, the Gateway Clipper Fleet offers several sightseeing cruises each day on Pittsburgh’s rivers.
