Description
The Gateway Party Liner (pictured here) was the first passenger barge pushed by a towboat. The junction between the two vessels was hidden by false side wheels. In 1955, John E. Connelly was the treasurer of ALCOSAN, the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority. One of this agency’s missions was the vitalization of the Pittsburgh rivers, which had become dirty and neglected in the preceding years. Connelly, who also realized the potential of the rivers, felt that an excursion boat was needed to show them off. His nephew, who he had enlisted to find a craft, located the boat, “Bridget Anne” in Erie. In the Spring of 1958, this vessel, christened the "Gateway Clipper" inaugurated pleasure cruises on the city’s rivers. Today, the Gateway Clipper Fleet offers several sightseeing, dinner, and specialized cruises each day on Pittsburgh’s rivers.
