Description
Mayor David L. Lawrence cutting the ribbon at the opening ceremony for the Children’s Zoo in Highland Park. In 1898, Christopher Lyman Magee and an associate offered $125,000 for construction of the buildings for zoological gardens if the City of Pittsburgh would provide the land. The Children’s Zoo was built with a donation of a $44,000 from the Sarah Mellon Scaife Foundation. In 1980, a 10-year, $20 million master renovation project was undertaken to place the animals at the zoo into natural settings such as the Asian Forest, African Savannah, and Tropical Forest. The zoo, privatized in 1994, is ranked number one as Pittsburgh’s most visited cultural attraction.
