Description
Hartwood Acres, a 629-acre estate located at 215 Saxonburg Boulevard in Hampton and Indiana Townships, is owned by Allegheny County and operated by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation of Allegheny County. Hartwood was designed in 1929 as the home of the late John and Mary Flinn Lawrence. The estate has evolved over time as a recreation of an English country residence, complete with a gatehouse and stables, formal gardens, and bowling greens. The style of architecture is Tudor Gothic, with elements of Elizabethan, Queen Anne, and Georgian design. The estate boasts some of the finest facilities for equestrians in the eastern United States. The park, open since 1976, today offers expanded programs of public activities.
