Description
The West Park Aviary-Conservatory, known today as the National Aviary, is located in Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood. The $340,000 facility opened on August 10, 1952, two years after ground was broken. In 1968 the Aviary-Conservatory’s largest exhibit, a walkthrough tropical marsh, and six other exhibits were constructed that doubled the size of the existing facility. In 1993 the United States Congress designated it as the nations’ official avian institution, and its name was changed to the National Aviary. The Aviary was one of the first zoos to present its collection in free-flight rooms and natural exhibits with over 25,000 square feet of space. In the 1980s the Aviary began to focus toward wildlife conservation by beginning the captive breeding of rare and endangered birds. Today, the National Aviary, home to over 600 birds of more than 220 species, is America’s only independent indoor nonprofit bird zoo.
