Description
Pittsburgh’s “Three Sister” Bridges, the Sixth, Seventh, and Ninth Street Bridges. The “Three Sister” bridges were part of a massive series of bridge-building campaigns begun in 1924 by the Allegheny County Department of Public Works, and finished in the late 1930s by the Depression-period Allegheny County Authority. The B&O Stores is the large structure between the Seventh and Ninth Street Bridges. The tall skyscraper in the far right is the Pressley Street High-Rise, which opened in 1970 as a low-rent housing community for the elderly. The building was constructed by the Mellon-Stuart Company under the guidance of noted Pittsburgh architect Tasso Katselas. It was run by the City of Pittsburgh Housing Authority. In 2004 Pressley Street Apartments offered 212 apartments for the elderly and physically challenged.
