Description
Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “View of steel cribbing during excavation and laying of footer.” The photograph shows sewer repair in progress, a constant battle for improving the quality of water in Pittsburgh’s three rivers. Prior to 1959 raw sewage and industrial wastes were dumped into the creeks, such as Whitaker Run, and rivers. The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority was established about this time for the purpose of cleaning up the rivers and presently there are 125 sewage treatment plants in the county.
