Description
Pitt Stadium, a classic bowl stadium, covered about nine acres and was 791 feet long by 617 feet wide. A total of 2,200 tons of structural steel as well as 1,000 tons of reinforced steel, and 20,000 cubic yards of concrete were used during the construction of the stadium. Construction began on August 7, 1924, and was completed on September 1, 1925. On August 3, 1927, thousands came to the stadium to welcome Charles A. Lindbergh. Permanent lights for night games were installed in 1987, and “Panther-Vision,” a large-screen video system, was added ten years later. The stadium has been host to five national championship football teams. Many great names in football history have come out of this stadium including, Mike Ditka, Tony Dorsett, and Dan Marino. In December 1999, Pitt Stadium was razed to make way for the Peterson Events Center.
