Description
The Espy House, built in 1766 by Colonel David Espy, is located in downtown Bedford, Pennsylvania. This house served as the headquarters for President George Washington during the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794. On September 19, 1794, President George Washington was the first and only president to lead troops into battle. Washington and 1,200 troops were putting down a rebellion of farmers in Western Pennsylvania who refused to pay the whiskey excise tax. The Espy House, located on Pitt Street, is currently houses a bakery and apartments.
