Description
During the mid-1940s the Point was in an extreme state of deterioration. The area included freight yards, a terminal, largely unused railroad tracks, riverbanks littered with debris, and the grand Exhibition Hall that had held its last show in 1918. In Pittsburgh Renaissance I was a cultural revolution begun by prominent industrialists, most notably, Richard Mellon. The Point became the focus of this urban planning project. The promenade construction (pictured here) along the banks of the Allegheny River was most likely an aspect of clearing the twenty-three acres of the Golden Triangle to make room for Point State Park and the fountain complex that now resides there. The Manchester Bridge (top) was demolished in 1970.
