Description
The future location of Point State Park on the day of the demolition ceremony, May 18, 1950. The wrecking ball would swing into the small house in the center of the picture, believed to be 103 years old, displaying the sign marking the occasion. This date also served as the kickoff of the beginning of the Renaissance initiative aimed at reviving the City of Pittsburgh. During the mid-1940s the Point was in an extreme state of disrepair. The area included freight yards, a terminal, largely unused railroad tracks, and riverbanks littered with debris. There were few empty spaces or a clear view of the rivers. Through the cooperation of Mayor David L. Lawrence and industrialist Richard K. Mellon, working with the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, supported by the city, county and state governments and others, a plan for redevelopment of the Point emerged. Point State Park was completed in 1974.
