Description
The Mellon Institute for Industrial Research, located in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, was constructed from 1931-1937 and was modeled after the Parthenon by its designer, Benno Janssen. The elevation of the building on the Fifth Avenue side (shown here) replicated the length of the Parthenon. The 62 stone columns surrounding the building are 42 feet high and each weigh 60 tons. The building extends underground to the bedrock (six stories) to minimize vibration for scientific experiments. The Institute was originally founded by Andrew W. and Richard B. Mellon in 1913 and later merged with the Carnegie Institute of Technology to become Carnegie Mellon University. Research was conducted by personnel working under fellowships sponsored by various industries. The private companies paid for the time and expenses of the employees and researchers while keeping the rights and profits from the new products or processes.
