Description
The Pittsburgh Ballet Theater (PBT), a not-for-profit organization, was formed in affiliation with Point Park College and the Pittsburgh Playhouse in the late 1960s. The PBT had its premier performance in November of 1969 and the local troupe performed “Nutcracker” at the Pittsburgh Playhouse during the Christmas season of that same year. The PBT opened its spring season in April 1970 at the Craft Avenue Theater in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood. The PBT performed at Heinz Hall up until 1987, when they moved to the newly restored 2,880-seat Benedum Center for the Performing Arts (formerly the Stanley Theater). The PBT also maintains the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater School, an official school of classical dance that has an enrollment of about 300 students and offers more than twelve levels of studio instruction.
