Description
The Schenley Park Hotel, located at Bigelow Boulevard at Forbes and Fifth Avenues in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, was designed by Rutan and Russell in 1898. The building was Pittsburgh’s first large steel-framed skyscraper hotel and before its closing in the 1950s, was arguably the most elegant hotel in Pittsburgh. Visiting artists performing at the Syria Mosque a half-block away would stay at this hotel, as well as visiting baseball teams playing at Forbes Field. In the mid 1950s, with some changes, it became the Student Union at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1983 the upper floors were gutted and completely reworked inside, while the ground-floor rooms were generally restored and refurnished.
