Description
Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-1886), who never lived to see them completed, designed the Allegheny Court House and Jail, located at 436 Grant Street. Construction began in 1884 and was completed in 1888. According to the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, the Courthouse consists of a large hollow rectangle 301 feet by 209 feet, having a basement, five stories and attics on each side with an interior court 145 feet by 70 feet. The style of the Courthouse is generally Southern French and Spanish Romanesque, but the form of the building harks back to other sources as well. The Jail has been expanded and remodeled at various times, notably in 1909 when F.J. Osterling designed a new wing as well as extensions to the earlier wings and enlarged the area of the jail wall. He copied Richardson’s wall system meticulously, while adding a round tower at Fifth and Ross Street.
