Description
Future site of the Carlton House Hotel and Apartments at Sixth Avenue and Grant Street in downtown Pittsburgh. The 21-story Carlton House Hotel, which opened in March 1952, was the first new hotel in downtown Pittsburgh in 25 years. It contained 550 units and cost about $17 million to construct. The complex reserved one story for shops and included a 4-story garage. It was imploded in August 1980 to make way for One Mellon Bank Center. In the center of the photograph is the Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail and immediately behind it is the Grant Building. In the right center (from right to left) are the Union Trust Building and the Frick Building both of which are located on Grant Street.
