Description
The Mesta Machine Company constructed heavy rope drives for running mills. The rope drives were composed of rope wheels that were made from a particular grade of melted iron. A pit lathe created the grooves on the surface of the wheel. These drives were known for their efficiency, low instillation cost, and noiseless operation. The elasticity of the ropes served as protection from shocks caused by the machinery driving the motor. Instead of having one big rope, each rope was a separate unit and the rope drive operated on a multiple system known as the English system. The Corliss Engine rope drive was favored by heavy industry throughout the world due to its reliability, simplicity, and low operating cost.
