Description
The Mesta Machine Company was the first manufacturer in the United States to build chilled iron rolls for plate mills. Mesta classified their rolls by strength and resilience. The rolls were composed of a variety of materials including, steel, iron, brass, cooper, lead, zinc, and even aluminum. The company produced many classes of these rolls, including rolls made of cast, forged or alloyed steel, as well as the “Mesta Special “ roll, which was a made of a special heat treated alloy. This heat treated alloy was known for its durability because on average it lasted three times longer than its counterparts. The chilled rolls had a high amount of surface finishing, which made them most suitable for plate and sheet mills. Cast or forged steel and alloy rolls were made up of acid open-hearth steel and were annealed to remove internal stresses.
