Description
The Mesta Machine Company was one of the first manufacturers in the United States to build reversing rolling mill engines for driving two-high rolling mills. The compound type of reversing engine was the most successful of its type due to its heavy, rugged design, and its innovative simple valve gear and single lever control. Mesta produced various types of reversing engines including twin cylinder, three cylinder high pressure or three cylinder compound, and twin tandem compound or three cylinder tandem compound engines. The plant, located about six miles from Pittsburgh, covered more than twenty acres and employed approximately three thousand employees, most of whom were skilled mechanics, in the late 1910s. In 1983 WHEMCO acquired the assets of Mesta Machine Company.
