Description
Holmes School was named in honor of William H. Holmes, a member of the Oakland Sub-District School Board (14th Ward) and the first principal of the Holmes School. The school, located at Holmes and Dawson Streets, was originally called the Oakland School, which opened in 1854 as one of three schools in the Oakland Sub-District, the other two being Bellefield and Soho. Construction on the building, which became the Holmes School, began in 1892. At the time only the central section of the school was constructed; the left and right wings were added in 1893 and 1894 respectively. Additions were added to the structure again in 1904 and 1907. Along with a bell tower that was removed in 1954, the school also had a grand interior stairwell, and six exterior fire escapes. In 1938 additional alterations were completed by architect, M.M. Steen.
