Description
Brashear High School was named in honor of Dr. John A. Brashear, the beloved “Uncle John” of Pittsburgh. Brashear, an amateur astronomer who designed lenses for telescopes around the world, was chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh. The original building, erected in 1874, was destroyed by fire and another structure, located at Eleanor and Primrose Streets in Pittsburgh’s South Side Slopes neighborhood, was designed in 1899 by architect C.M. Bartberger. The present Brashear High School was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Public School District in 1976 to comply with state orders to desegregate. The modern style school, located at 590 Crane Avenue and occupying about 400,000 square feet on a tract of former farmland, was designed by architects Curry, Martin, Highberger & Klaus. Brashear High School serves the Hazelwood, Hill District, South Side, Beechview, Brookline, and Mount Washington neighborhoods of Pittsburgh.
