Description
Birmingham School was named for the neighborhood in Pittsburgh in which it was located. Birmingham Borough was planned by a former native of the iron metropolis in England. He prophesied that “Pittsburgh will one day become the Birmingham of America.” The school, located at 15th and Sarah Streets in Pittsburgh’s South Side section, was completed in 1871. In 1895 it had the first kindergarten in the city. The school was closed in 1943, and in 1944 it was sold to the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh for $18,000 and renamed Saint Adalbert’s School.
