Description
Following the American Civil War the Allegheny Arsenal, located in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville section, continued to play a role in the lives of local residents. It became a storage and supply depot for the United States government until 1924 when the government decided the building had outlived its usefulness. Arsenal High School was constructed on the grounds of the Allegheny Arsenal between 1931 and 1940 in the art eco style. For a time the school became a girls’ vocational high school, but in 1971 it was reopened as Arsenal Middle School.
