  • Student-veterans working on automobiles at the auxiliary Quonset-hut at the Shakespeare School located at Shakespeare Street and Shady Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Shadyside neighborhood, as part of an auto-diesel curriculum offered to veterans. The 1897 Shakespeare School, named for the Shakespeare Hotel formerly located on the same site, closed in 1956. The Pittsburgh Board of Public Education established a comprehensive education and training program for veterans in 1946, including both academic and vocational courses. By 1958, when much of the program had been discontinued, over 27,000 World War II and Korean ex-servicemen had taken courses offered by this program.
