Description
Taylor Allderdice High School students in a biology class. The student in the background is busy examining a tortoise shell. The school, located at 2409 Shady Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood, was designed by architect Robert Maurice Trimble in 1926. The school was named in honor of Taylor Allderdice, a former member of the Board of Public Education. The building was completed in 1927 and occupied 207,000 square feet of floor space. The school also covers a full city block and has a playground that is about the same size as the school building itself. In 1956 two new chemistry and physics laboratories were constructed. Taylor Allderdice serves the Pittsburgh communities of East Hills, Greenfield, Hays, Hazelwood, Lincoln Place, New Homestead, Park Place, Regent Square, Squirrel Hill, Swisshelm Park, and portions of Homewood and Point Breeze.
