Description
Conroy School was named in honor of John M. Conroy, the first principal who served there from 1868 to 1878, and the person who initiated the first manual training school in the City of Pittsburgh. The school opened in 1867 and was known then as the Fifth Ward Public School until 1895, when its name was changed to J.M. Conroy Elementary School. In 1907 the school was destroyed by fire and was later rebuilt as an elementary and junior high school with vocational classrooms. In 1974 the school closed as an elementary school and was re-opened as the Conroy Education Center.
