Description
Schenley High School was named in honor of Mary E. Schenley, who inherited vast estates from her grandfather, General James O’Hara. Her inheritance included land located in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh where the name Schenley was prominently identified with the district. The high school, designed by architect Ed. Stotz, was built in 1916. It was the first high school in the United States costing over $1 million dollars to construct. Pittsburgh citizens were so interested in the building that, through donations, they presented the school with a three manual Skinner pipe organ. The Schenley High School cheerleaders, led by Rene Biggs, are shown during a Homecoming Game between Schenley and South High School.
