Description
Beechview and Beechwood Schools were named for the beech trees that existed in the immediate area. Beechview Elementary School, located at Fallowfield and Sebring Avenues, closed as an elementary school in 1932. The school was razed in 1943 and its property sold in 1953 to a private individual for $6,075. Beechwood Elementary School opened in 1908 when the school was still part of West Liberty Borough. In 1909 West Liberty Borough was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh and as a result, the school came under the authority of the Pittsburgh public school system. Beechwood Elementary School, located at 810 Rockland Avenue and designed by architect Press C. Dowler in 1922, replaced Beechview Elementary School after it was closed. Beechwood Elementary School serves the Pittsburgh communities of Beechview and parts of Brookline.
