Description
The W. H. McKelvy School was named in honor of Dr. William H. McKelvy, who for twenty years was President of the Central Board of Education prior to the reorganization of the Pittsburgh school system in 1911. McKelvy School, which opened in 1916, was located in the Hill District neighborhood of Pittsburgh on Bedford Avenue at Erin Street, about one mile east of downtown Pittsburgh. During the 1920s the school was used as an evening educational and community recreation center. Immigrants coming to Pittsburgh from various European countries received basic instruction in Americanization at the school in the evenings, while their children received formal education during the day.
