Description
Docent Mrs. Nancy Miller at the Carnegie Institute lectures Woolslair Elementary School eighth grade students on the “Walking Man” by artist Giacometti. The students were enrolled in the “Development of Painting” course, which covered cave paintings to works of the twentieth century. Woolslair Elementary School, located at 501 40th Street, derived its name from William Woolslair, who donated the site for the construction of a school. The school opened for occupancy in September 1897. During the 1920s immigrants took advantage of adult evening classes that included sewing, cooking, woodshop, and physical education. The school serves the Pittsburgh communities of Bloomfield, Lawrenceville, Polish Hill, and the Strip District.
