Description
Sterrett Classical Academy is a junior high school serving grades 6 through 8 that is open to all residents of Pittsburgh, however, preference is given to those residents living in the East and Central portions of the city. The school, which is named in honor of Superior Court Judge James Sterrett, was originally constructed in 1840 where the Homewood Cemetery is now located. It was moved and replaced in 1898 to its present location at 7100 Reynolds Street. The school, which was originally a primary school, was the first school in the Sterrett School District to have a well-equipped gym with a “physical education” instructor. In 1979 it became the Sterrett Classical Academy.
