Description
In 1900 the School Board of the Mount Albion Sub-District purchased a lot on Holmes Street extending from the McCandless Avenue to Fifty-third Street. On this lot at the corner of McCandless Avenue and Holmes Street the McCleary School was built. McCleary School was named in honor of Miss Rose McCleary, principle of the entire Mount Albion sub-district, which included Sunnyside, Mount Albion, Morningside, McCandless, and the new McCleary buildings. The interior of the school included floors of decorative tile, elaborate door surroundings, cast iron balustrades with swings and medallions, and newel posts with lion heads. On the exterior, the second floor had distinctive rounded arch windows detailed with Ionic columns and Florentine tracery and a beltcourse with wave motif separating the stories. The school was still open in the year 2000.
