Description
The Horace Mann School, located at 2819 Shadeland Avenue, was named in honor of the noted educational reformer. In the mid-1800s, Mann worked to replace squalid schoolhouses, banish cruel and harsh punishment, provide adequate books, and enrich study by providing music, hygiene and drawing to the students. It was formally known as the Eleventh Ward School. The original school, located in Manchester, was annexed to the City of Allegheny in 1872. In 1874, a new school was built on Shady Avenue (now Shadeland) and was called Shady Avenue School until 1913 when it was renamed after Horace Mann.
