Description
Portrait of John Bain "Jock" Sutherland, Pitt Panther guard from 1915-1918, who was named first team All-American in 1917. He began his head coaching career at Lafayette College from 1919 to 1923, leading the Leopards to the 1921 Eastern Collegiate Championship. His Pitt coaching career began in 1924, after the departure of his previous coach and mentor Glenn "Pop" Warner, and lasted until 1938. During this time he compiled a record of 111–20–12. He was known for his stern but calm and professional manner and received fierce devotion and respect from his players. Sutherland was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951.
