Biographical / Historical

Carrick was one of the city's largest areas which did not have a branch library. The budget for 1930 provided for a rented store building type of branch in each community. To reduce operating costs, both the Carrick and Brookline branches were open on alternating days with the same staff caring for both.

In 1941, a new Brookline facility was being constructed. At that time the Carrick and Knoxville branches were combined with Knoxville providing service to only adults and Carrick still providing all of its services. The Knoxville branch's new location was built in 1965, while the Carrick branch remained in the original location.

In 1989, there was a call for funding for the new Carrick Branch Library. The branch had been in the same location since 1929 and had continually suffered water damage. The Carrick Branch Library was dedicated on April 17, 1993, housed in a remodeled what used to be the Seemiller/Cox Table Tennis Center on 1811 Brownsville Road, across the street from the old facility. It serves the neighborhoods of Baldwin, Bon Air, Brentwood, Carrick and Overbrook.
