Biographical / Historical

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Beechview Branch was the seventeenth neighborhood location to open in the Carnegie Library system. The community of Beechview is situated in the southwestern section of Pittsburgh and is surrounded by Banksville, West End, Mt. Washington, Brookline, and Dormont neighborhoods. The majority of the patrons at the library are from Beechview, but some do come from surrounding areas. The building, located on Broadway Avenue, in the heart of Beechview, is on the former site of the Beth EL Synagogue which was purchased by the Pittsburgh Mayor at the time, Joseph M. Barr. After the purchase in 1965, the synagogue was demolished to make way for the new library. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on June 23, 1966 and the dedication of the new branch occurred on October 29, 1967. In October 2007, Beechview celebrated 40 years in the community with a "Back to the 60's" themed open house.
