Biographical / Historical

Harvey Bartlett Gaul (1881 – 1945) was a Pittsburgh conductor, composer, music instructor, music critic, and author. He composed over 500 organ and choral works. He was the founder and conductor of the Pittsburgh Savoyards and the Civic String Orchestra. He worked as music critic and arts editor for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 1914-1934. Gaul was a music instructor at the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Institute of Technology, and Washington and Jefferson University. In 1920 the newly founded radio station KDKA appointed Gaul as its first Music Director. In 1921, he gained the post of Feature Editor at The Musical Forecast. The periodical focused primarily on Pittsburgh's musical life, its leadership, and organizations. Gaul also served as organist and choirmaster at Calvary Episcopal Church in Shadyside for 35 years until his death in 1945.

The Harvey Gaul Composition Competition is a biennial contest that recognizes composers for their outstanding work and memorializes Gaul's commitment to music and music composition. The contest is administered by the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble.

The organization Friends of Harvey Gaul was established in 1946.

Mission of the organization (from a card in the archive): The perpetuation of the name, inspiration, high accomplishments and remembrance of the broad humanitarianism of Harvey Gaul; the furtherance of music and other arts; the promotion of musical education and appreciation; the fostering of musical and other forms of artistic creation, development and expression; the enrichment of the cultural life of the community by making available to the public facilities for the enjoyment of the works of music and other arts; the inception and prosecution of plans, policies and methods in the fulfillment thereof; and the acquisition, operation and maintenance of facilities for the accomplishment of these objectives.
