  • Dr. Edward Litchfield became Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh in 1957. Dr. Litchfield oversaw a huge expansion in the University programs. Schenley Hotel was bought and renovated in this period. He also acquired the land and money for Hillman Library. However sufficient funding for all of Litchfield's plans was never accomplished and the University plunged into debt. Dr. Litchfield resigned in 1965, and in 1968 died in a plane crash over Lake Michigan.
