Description
A model of the vacuum degassing unit installed at O. H. #5 in 1964. This device was a vacuum chamber in which molten steel was poured between two ladles. The vacuum served to remove hydrogen gas that was dissolved in the steel as the steel was poured, allowing for stronger steel with fewer defects. The introduction of this new piece of equipment was part of a general push on the part of the corporation to increase product quality and competitiveness during the 1960s.
