Description
Molten iron being poured into a new submarine ladle at the Carrie Furnaces. The company put the new ladle, which got its name from its submarine-like shape, into service in 1958. The railroad car mounted submarine ladle had a greater capacity for transporting molten iron from the Carrie Furnaces to the open-hearth furnaces in Homestead. A number of new facilities were constructed in support of this new piece of equipment.
