Description
U.S. Engineer photograph of the Union Bridge being dismantled, looking toward Pittsburgh's North Side neighborhood. The Union Bridge, built in 1875 and removed in 1907, was constructed so low that it obstructed Allegheny River traffic. This problem concerned the U.S. government so much that in 1899 the Secretary of War required all bridges on Pittsburgh's rivers to be raised higher or replaced. The Union Bridge was the last wooden river crossing bridge constructed in Pittsburgh.
