Description
A view of local businesses on Carson Street including an Isaly's, Chester's Greeting Cards and Phonograph Records, and Young's Tavern. The Isaly Dairy Company was founded in Pittsburgh in 1931 but has its origins as the Mansfield Pure Milk Company, founded in Mansfield Ohio in 1902. The stores were famous for skyscraper ice cream cones and could be found in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Chester's Greeting Cards shows an advertisement for the defunct radio station WHOD (Homestead), "The Station of Nations," started in 1948 and originally located in Homestead. WHOD sought to provide the immigrant community with ethnic and foreign language programming. The station featured Craig "Porky" Chedwick as one of its early disk jockeys, playing a mix of R&B, gospel, and jazz. By 1956 the station format would cease its ethnic programming and was sold to Dynamic Broadcasting where it would become known as WAMO (Allegheny, Monongahela, Ohio).
