Description
A man sitting on a bench in front of the bear dens at the Pittsburgh Zoo. In the 1930s, City Councilman John M. Phillips wanted to do something about the deteriorating condition of the zoo. One of the main exhibits in need of repair was the bear cages. After a visit to the Bronx Zoo, Phillips returned to Pittsburgh with a $300,000 plan for new barless bear dens which were to be among the first renovations in a ten-year plan for the zoo. The new dens were able to be made barless, by employing a moat to keep the bears from getting to the visitors. This design was made popular in Germany at the turn of the twentieth century. The dens opened on September 11, 1937.
