Description
Construction of Monkey Island at the Pittsburgh Zoo was completed in early 1941. It was built utilizing a method made popular in Germany at the turn of the twentieth century in which bars were replaced with moats to keep the animals separated from visitors. The island contained dozens of rhesus monkeys which are native to Afghanistan, India, Thailand and Southern China. Monkey Island has since been removed from the Pittsburgh Zoo.
