Description
During the Cold War, the fields in Frick Park beyond the Nicholson Street entrance (Blue Slide Playground) were used as an anti-aircraft artillery battery that became operational in 1953. The photo shows one of the tents and some other structures at the battery, which had a four 90-mm gun battery, supplies, ammunition, and administrative and communication facilities. It was part of a ring of 12 Nike anti-aircraft missile bases located around Pittsburgh.
