Description
The power plant under Maeburn Road provided central heating and refrigeration to all the buildings in the Thomas A. Watkins development around Forward and Murray Avenues. When the Squirrel Hill Theater was demolished in 2021, the interior of the power plant was briefly exposed before a new building rose on the site of the theater. This photo shows the interior of the plant with some of the machinery that supplied heat and refrigeration to all the apartments in the 1920s. Tunnels carrying the heat and refrigeration pipes went off from this room, large enough for workers to maintain the pipes.
