Description
The Poli restaurant sign indicates that Poli restaurant was across Murray Avenue to the left of the Modern Curtain & Rug store , which was located in the corner of the five-story indoor parking garage real-estate developer Thomas A. Watkins built to house the vehicles of people staying in the Morrowfield Apartment Hotel next door. Watkins built the garage for the hotel because he wanted to attract an upscale clientele who owned cars. The buildings were built in the 1920s. The hotel boasted central heating and a central refrigeration system, novel at a time when most people still relied on iceboxes. The façade of the Morrowfield has an Italianate theme, with brick walls and white glazed terra cotta accents and decorative balusters.
