A letter from A.B. McSwigan of Kennywood to George A. Schmidt of Riverview Park, notes pressure from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the local Board of Education caused the park to decide to close the pool and install U Drive Em' boats for the 1953 season.
