Description
Sign encourages residents to donate to The Home for Crippled Children (today The Children's Institute) in order to expand the grounds of the non-profit's hospital and school. Founded in 1902 as The Memorial Home for Crippled Children (the name was changed to The Home for Crippled Children in 1958) by Mary Irwin Laughlin, the original location of the hospital was in the East Liberty neighborhood at Margaretta and Beatty Streets. The facilities were moved to its current location at Dennison Avenue (today the front entrance is on Shady Avenue) in 1907. At the time of this image, according to an article in the September 2, 1970 edition of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the rehabilitation facility cared for 230 children - 150 of which were full-time, living on the grounds. In 1981 the name of the facility was changed to the The Rehabilitation Institute of Pittsburgh, and once again in 1998 becoming The Children's Institute.
